    A Framework for Enhanced QoS Support in IEEE 802.11e Networks

    IEEE 802.11 based WLANs have became popular, but they can only provide best effort services and so they are poorly suitable for multimedia applications. Recently IEEE 802.11e standard has been proposed to support quality of service. The new standard introduces a so-called Hybrid Coordination Function containing two medium access mechanisms: contention-based channel access and controlled channel access. In this paper we propose a novel framework to better support QoS guarantees for multimedia applications. It comprises QoS Manager, Admission Control, Enhanced Scheduler, Predictor and Feedback System. The scheduler adopted supports real-time applications, variable packet sizes and variable bit rate traffic streams. We show that this framework is suitable to be used by applications requesting Application Level Contracts which will be translated in Resource Level Contracts to the scheduler subsystem. The QoS manager component is able to dynamically manage available resources under different load conditions

    Efficient Inflation Estimation

    This paper investigates the use of trimmed means as high-frequency estimators of" inflation. The known characteristics of price change distributions, specifically the observation" that they generally exhibit high levels of kurtosis, imply that simple averages of price data are" unlikely to produce efficient estimates of inflation. Trimmed means produce superior estimates" of core inflation,' which we define as a long-run centered moving average of CPI and PPI" inflation. We find that trimming 9% from each tail of the CPI price-change distribution from the tails of the PPI price-change distribution, yields an efficient estimator of core inflation" for these two series, although lesser trims also produce substantial efficiency gains. Historically the optimal trimmed estimators are found to be nearly 23% more efficient (in terms of root-mean-square error) than the standard mean CPI Moreover, the efficient estimators are robust to sample period and to the definition of the" presumed underlying long-run trend in inflation.

    Improving the QoS of IEEE 802.11e networks through imprecise computation

    IEEE 802.11e HCCA reference scheduler is based on fixed value parameters that do not adapt to traffic changes, thus quality of service (QoS) for multimedia applications is a challenge, especially in the case of variable bit rate (VBR) streams, that requires dynamic resource assignment. This paper is focused on immediate dynamic TXOP HCCA (IDTH) scheduling algorithm and its new evolution immediate dynamic TXOP HCCA plus (IDTH+). Their reclaiming mechanisms, refined by the monitoring of transmission duration, aim at overcoming the limits of fixed preallocation of resources by varying the stations transmission time and avoiding waste of resources. Simulations and theoretical analysis based on the imprecise computation model show that the integration of IDTH and IDTH+ can achieve improved network performance in terms of transmission queues length, mean access delay and packets drop rate, and to efficiently manage bursty traffic. Moreover, the performance improvements of IDTH+ with respect to IDTH are highlighted

    Are supramodality and cross-modal plasticity the yin and yang of brain development? From blindness to rehabilitation

    Research in blind individuals has primarily focused for a long time on the brain plastic reorganization that occurs in early visual areas. Only more recently, scientists have developed innovative strategies to understand to what extent vision is truly a mandatory prerequisite for the brainā€™s fine morphological architecture to develop and function. As a whole, the studies conducted to date in sighted and congenitally blind individuals have provided ample evidence that several ā€˜visualā€™ cortical areas develop independently from visual experience and do process information content regardless of the sensory modality through which a particular stimulus is conveyed: a property named supramodality. At the same time, lack of vision leads to a structural and functional reorganization within 'visual' brain areas, a phenomenon known as cross-modal plasticity. Cross-modal recruitment of the occipital cortex in visually deprived individuals represents an adaptative compensatory mechanism that mediates processing of non-visual inputs. Supramodality and cross-modal plasticity appear to be the 'yin and yang' of brain development: supramodal is what takes place despite the lack of vision, whereas cross-modal is what happens because of lack of vision. Here we provide a critical overview of the research in this field and discuss the implications that these novel findings have for the development of educative/rehabilitation approaches and sensory substitution devices in sensory-impaired individuals

    Reproductive factors and the risk of invasive and intraepithelial cervical neoplasia.

    The relation between reproductive factors and cervical neoplasia was evaluated in a case-control study of 528 cases of invasive cancer compared with 456 control subjects in hospital for acute conditions unrelated to any of the established or suspected risk factors for cervical cancer, and of 335 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia compared with 262 outpatient controls. The risk of invasive cervical cancer increased with number of livebirths, the estimated multivariate relative risk (RR) being 4.39 in women with five or more births compared with nulliparous women. There was also an inverse relation with age at first livebirth (RR = 0.42 for greater than or equal to 30 vs. less than 20 years) which, however, disappeared after inclusion of parity in multiple logistic regression analysis. Likewise, cases of invasive cervical cancer tended more frequently to report induced abortions. However, this association was not statistically significant after allowance for confounding factors, including parity. No relation emerged with number of spontaneous abortion and age at last pregnancy. When the interaction between parity and sexual habits was analysed, the relative risk increased in subsequent strata of parity with increasing number of sexual partners or decreasing age at first intercourse, thus suggesting an independent effect of sexual and reproductive factors, and hence multiplicative on the relative risk of invasive cervical cancer. No consistent association emerged between the risk of intraepithelial cervical neoplasm and parity, number of abortions and age at first or last birth

    Retinitis pigmentosa and ocular motility alterations: new frontiers, review

    Purpose: To carry out a review of the literature on alterations in extraocular motility in Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), focusing on the possible genetic basis of ocular alterations. Design: Systematic review Methods: The search of publications was carried out using the databases: Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, considering clinical cases, case reports, and systematic reviews of ocular motility alterations in the Retinitis Pigmentosa in the literature. The words: ā€œocular motility alterations, Retinitis Pigmentosa, orthoptic evaluation, case reports, clinical cases, systematic reviewsā€ were used. Results: A total of 2 articles from 2006ā€“2022 were retrieved: No other ocular motility alterations clinical cases linked to RP were found before. Particularly, a study conducted on patients affected by typical RP showed that there was an impaired motility in 50% of them. Since RP is a genetically determined disease, in reference to the studies analyzed, the absence of eye movement disorders in a percentage of the sample could be related to the different penetrance of the disease that determines the existence of healthy carriers. Conclusion: Therefore, it would be important to search for a possible correlation between the genetic mutations involved in this hereditary disorder and the deficits in extraocular motility, in order to make an early diagnosis of RP in genetically predisposed subjects. The existence of alterations of extraocular motility in subjects with RP, indicates that a careful orthoptic screening can allow a further contribution to an early diagnosis of this disease, especially in subjects with positive family history and healthy carriers
